Are you tired of serving the same old desserts that leave your guests politely nodding instead of genuinely swooning? This Oreo Tiramisu recipe transforms the beloved Italian classic into an irresistible chocolate-cookie masterpiece that will have everyone asking for seconds (and the recipe).

Hey there! I’m Emeli from FoodFansy, and let me tell you a story about how this recipe came to life. During my travels through Italy, I fell head-over-heels for traditional tiramisu – that perfect marriage of coffee, cream, and ladyfingers. But when I returned home, I found myself craving something that combined that Italian elegance with a playful American twist. One rainy Sunday afternoon, staring at a package of Oreos in my pantry, inspiration struck. What if I could capture all the sophisticated flavors of tiramisu but with the nostalgic comfort of everyone’s favorite cookie?

As someone who’s spent years perfecting dessert techniques in professional kitchens and home settings alike, I can promise you this: this Oreo Tiramisu delivers restaurant-quality results with surprisingly simple steps. In this guide, we’ll cover everything from selecting the perfect mascarpone to assembly secrets that ensure every layer is picture-perfect, plus troubleshooting tips and creative variations.

Why This Oreo Tiramisu Recipe Works

This Oreo Tiramisu isn’t just a novelty – it’s a carefully crafted dessert that improves on the original in several key ways:

Uses familiar, accessible ingredients – No hunting down expensive ladyfingers or specialty items • Foolproof assembly technique – My step-by-step method prevents soggy cookies and ensures perfect layers • Make-ahead friendly – Actually tastes better after overnight chilling, perfect for entertaining • Crowd-pleasing flavor profile – Combines the sophistication of tiramisu with the comfort of chocolate cookies • Customizable sweetness – Easy to adjust coffee strength and cocoa intensity to your preference

Choosing the Right Oreo Tiramisu Ingredients

Best Oreo Varieties for This Recipe

While classic Oreos work beautifully, certain varieties can elevate your tiramisu:

  • Original Oreos: The gold standard – perfect cookie-to-cream ratio
  • Double Stuf Oreos: Extra cream adds richness but can make assembly messier
  • Golden Oreos: Creates a lighter, more traditional tiramisu appearance
  • Thins: Great for delicate layers, though you’ll need more cookies

Coffee Selection Tips

The coffee component is crucial for authentic tiramisu flavor:

  • Espresso: Provides the most authentic, intense flavor
  • Strong cold brew: Smooth and less acidic than regular coffee
  • French roast: Bold flavor that stands up to the mascarpone
  • Instant coffee substitute: Mix 2 tablespoons instant coffee with 1 cup hot water, then cool

Mascarpone Quality Matters

Look for mascarpone that’s:

  • Smooth and creamy without graininess
  • Bright white in color
  • Fresh (check expiration dates)
  • Slightly softened but still cold when mixing

Ingredients & Prep for Oreo Tiramisu

Essential Oreo Tiramisu Components

For the Mascarpone Filling:

  • 4 large egg yolks, room temperature
  • 2 large whole eggs, room temperature
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup strong coffee, cooled
  • 1 lb mascarpone cheese (450g), slightly softened
  • 1½ cups heavy cream, cold

For Assembly:

  • 1 cup strong coffee, cooled
  • 1 family pack Oreos (reserve 3 for topping)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder for dusting

Prep Work Essentials

Temperature Control: Bring eggs to room temperature 30 minutes before starting. This ensures smooth mixing and prevents the mascarpone from seizing.

Coffee Preparation: Brew your coffee extra strong and let it cool completely. Hot coffee will melt your cream layers and create a soggy mess.

Equipment Setup: Have your double boiler ready, whisk clean and dry, and your assembly dish chilled in the refrigerator.

Step-by-Step Oreo Tiramisu Cooking Instructions

Pre-Cooking Prep for Oreo Tiramisu

  1. Set up a double boiler by placing a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan with simmering water (bowl shouldn’t touch water)
  2. Separate your eggs carefully – even a drop of yolk in the whites can prevent proper whipping
  3. Measure all ingredients and have them at proper temperatures
  4. Prepare your assembly dish by lightly chilling it

Cooking Method for Oreo Tiramisu Filling

Creating the Sabayon Base:

  1. Combine egg yolks, whole eggs, sugar, vanilla, and ½ cup coffee in your double boiler bowl
  2. Whisk continuously over simmering water until mixture becomes pale, thick, and foamy (about 8-10 minutes)
  3. The mixture should coat the back of a spoon and leave ribbons when lifted
  4. Remove from heat and cool for 10 minutes

Incorporating Mascarpone:

  1. Add slightly softened mascarpone to the cooled egg mixture
  2. Whisk until completely smooth – if lumps persist, use an immersion blender briefly
  3. The mixture should be silky and uniform in color

Doneness Check for Oreo Tiramisu Components

Perfect Sabayon Indicators:

  • Mixture has tripled in volume
  • Pale yellow color throughout
  • Thick enough to coat a spoon
  • No raw egg taste when sampled

Cream Whipping Test:

  • Whip cream to medium-stiff peaks – they should hold their shape but not be grainy
  • Stop just before butter formation begins

Final Assembly Technique for Oreo Tiramisu

  1. Gently fold whipped cream into mascarpone mixture using a large spoon or spatula
  2. Use a figure-eight motion to preserve airiness
  3. Fold just until no white streaks remain

Pro Tips for Perfect Oreo Tiramisu

Avoiding Common Oreo Tiramisu Mistakes

Preventing Soggy Layers:

  • Dip Oreos quickly – 2-3 seconds maximum
  • Use a shallow dish for coffee to control soaking
  • Tap excess coffee off each cookie before layering

Temperature Control:

  • Keep mascarpone mixture chilled during assembly
  • Work in a cool kitchen when possible
  • Chill your mixing bowls and beaters beforehand

Essential Tool Recommendations for Oreo Tiramisu

  • Digital kitchen scale: Ensures accurate mascarpone measurements
  • Large wire whisk: Better incorporation than electric mixers for delicate folding
  • Offset spatula: Perfect for smooth, even layers
  • Fine-mesh sifter: For dust-free cocoa topping

Storage & Make-Ahead Tips for Oreo Tiramisu

Optimal Chilling Time: 4-6 hours minimum, overnight preferred Storage Method: Cover tightly with plastic wrap pressed directly onto surface Freezing: Freeze up to 1 month, thaw in refrigerator overnight before serving

FAQs About Oreo Tiramisu

Can I make Oreo Tiramisu without raw eggs? Yes! Use pasteurized eggs or substitute with a no-egg mascarpone mousse using gelatin and whipped cream for stability.

How long does Oreo Tiramisu last in the refrigerator? When properly covered, it stays fresh for 3-4 days. The flavors actually improve after the first day as they meld together.

Can I freeze Oreo Tiramisu? Absolutely! Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving. The texture may be slightly denser but still delicious.

Oreo Tiramisu Recipe: 5 Incredible Steps to Divine Dessert Bliss

  • Author: Emeli
  • Total Time: 25minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Description

This oreo tiramisu has all of the flavours of a traditional tiramisu with a very nontraditional swap of ladyfingers for chocolate sandwich cookies. Oreos soak up the coffee so beautifully and give the tiramisu a deep chocolate flavour. They make the perfect swap if you can’t find ladyfingers or want an equally delicious twist on the classic!

Ingredients

Filling

  • 4 large yolks room temperature
  • 2 large eggs whole, room temperature
  •  cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup strong coffee cooled (see substitutions in notes)
  • 1 lb mascarpone cheese 450g, slightly softened
  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream cold (whipping cream)

Assembly

  • 1 cup strong coffee cooled (see substitutions in notes)
  • 1 family pack oreos set 3 oreos aside for crumbling on top (see substitutions in notes)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
Makes: 8 x 11inchrectangle

Instructions

Filling

  • Pour a few inches of water into a medium saucepan. Find a heat safe bowl that fits well on top of the pan without touching the bottom or the water. Bring the water in the saucepan to a simmer.
  • Combine yolks, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and coffee in the heat safe bowl. Whisk until combined.
4 large yolks,2 large eggs,⅔ cup granulated sugar,1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract,½ cup strong coffee
  • Place the bowl on top of the saucepan and whisk. Continue whisking with a wire whisk until the mixture foams up and thickens considerably.
  • Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Add mascarpone cheese and whisk it into the egg yolks and whisk until smooth. If it’s still lumpy you can use a blender to help make it smooth.
    1 lb mascarpone cheese
  • Whip the cream until medium-stiff peaks with a whisk or stand mixer. Be careful not to overwhip or it will become grainy.
    1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture with a whisk until smooth.

Notes

Keep the tiramisu in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze it, wrapped tightly for up to 1 month.

Coffee Swaps:

  • You can use strong brewed decaff coffee for a low caffeinated version. You can also use a strong black tea instead.
  • To deepen the flavour with a bit of liquor, I strongly recommend substituting half of the coffee in the filling and assembly with Kahlua or dark rum. My family always requests it to be spiked with kahlua!
  • For a coffee free version, you can easily substitute all of the coffee with milk.

Oreo Swaps:

You can use any chocolate (or vanilla) sandwich cookies you prefer. You can also use traditional ladyfingers in this recipe as well, use them the exact same way you would the oreos.
